Wangari Maathai Day 2020

March 3, 2020 - 08:00AM
Freedom Corner, Uhuru Park

The Green Belt Movement is pleased to invite you to the commemoration of Wangari Maathai Day (WMD)/Africa Environment Day (AED) on 3rd March, 2020.

In January 2012, the African Union adopted a decision calling for the joint celebrations of the African Environment Day and Wangari Maathai Day. The celebration of the Wangari Maathai Day is in recognition of the work and life of the late Prof. Wangari Maathai who dedicated her life to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in Africa.

We will hold a public event to celebrate the environmental legacy of Prof. Wangari Maathai, the 2004 Nobel Peace Laureate, and sensitize Kenyans on the current environmental challenges. The key theme for 2020 event is: Our Resources; Our Future. The theme underlines the central role of natural resources as foundation for sustainable development.

This will be marked at the Freedom Corner at Uhuru Park, a city green jewel and natural resource, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Other observance entails thanksgiving prayers for 50 years that the park has refreshed Kenyans.
