About The Green Belt Movement (GBM)

The Green Belt Movement (GBM), founded by Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai in 1977 under the auspices of the National Council of Women of Kenya (NCWK), is a globally renowned environmental conservation organization that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods. Through our transformative grassroots initiatives, GBM integrates climate resilience, gender advocacy, and environmental sustainability to address critical challenges facing marginalized communities.

As part of GBM’s multi-faceted approach, our programs focus on reforestation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, water harvesting, gender-based advocacy, and creating sustainable livelihoods. GBM’s work aligns with global efforts to combat climate change while addressing local needs, contributing significantly to building climate-resilient ecosystems and communities.
