Childrens Peace Festival in the Wangari Maathai Peace Park in Molo Town.

November 21, 2012 - 10:00AM

The Wangari Maathai Peace Park was recently established in Molo town to provide a neutral meeting place for peace building councils and other community members. Supported by the town council and in collaboration with several peace clubs, the children’s peace festival marks the opening of the Peace Parkand a new beginning for community collaboration.

The festival will bring together 1,000 school children from Molo and Kuresoi districts to promote peaceful coexistence through art, song, dance and plays. The event, which is set to be opened by the Provincial Commissioner for Rift Valley, will include a march and a tree planting session where 47 peace trees will be planted to represent the 47 counties of Kenya.

GBM has organised this festival to acknowledge children as key agents for change and inspire them to communicate peace messages to their parents and throughout their communities.

The Green Belt Movement

Over the last five years the Green Belt Movement has conducted Peace Tent activities in Naivasha, Molo and Kuresoi constituencies in the Rift Valley Province. These activities are aimed at building cultures of peace, promoting sustainable environmental management and supporting ‘smart water for schools’ projects. Alongside encouraging and facilitating meetings between elders across the communities, youth across different ethnic minorities have formed teams and took part in a football tournament organised by GBM in September 2012.
