9 May 2012: The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) has launched a new award, in commemoration of Wangari Maathai. It will recognize individuals who work towards preserving, restoring and sustainably managing forests and communicating the role that forests play in rural livelihoods and the environment.

Applicants for the US$20,000 award should be nominated by a third party, until 15 June 2012. An international jury will select the award recipient based on elements such as empowering civil society, fostering social commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation of forests in society.

The award will be presented at the 21st Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Committee on Forestry (COFO), which is meeting in late September 2012.
