Wangari Maathai Day 2019

March 3, 2019 - 10:00AM

Seven years ago, during the 18th Ordinary Session of the Summit of the African Union (AU), AU Head of State and Government member states designated 3rd March as Wangari Maathai Day (WMD) to be observed in conjunction with Africa Environmental Day (AED).

GBM has thus organized a national event at the City Park which is a national monument and one the few green jewels and forest ecosystems in Nairobi County.

This event will create a platform for public discourses on pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, desertification, deforestation, land degradation and endangered biodiversity which are mainly responsible for problems related to food security, health and sustainable development.

The Green Belt Movement, partners and other interested parties will plant over 2000 indigenous trees in degraded sections of the park. Other activities include; performance from Kenya forest Service, students’ skits and community group dances, all aimed at fostering messages of peace, inculcation sound environmental values and upholding Prof. Maathai’s Legacy.

We cordially invite you to join us and the nation in marking this auspicious event on 2nd March 2019 at the City Park, Nairobi at 10.00 am.

We further wish to inform you that GBM will inaugurate a Conference Room honored to Prof. Wangari Maathai by the August 7th Memorial Trust, on Sunday 3rd March, 2019, 11.00 A.M at the August 7th Memorial Park, Nairobi and also a tree planting ceremony at the City Park, Nairobi soon thereafter.

The First Lady Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta is the Chief Guest.
