Invitation to Wangari Maathai/ Africa Environment Day

March 1, 2016
The Green Belt Movement is pleased to invite you to the commemoration of Wangari Maathai Day (WMD)/ Africa Environment Day (AED) on 3rd March, 2016.

The celebration of Wangari Maathai Day is in recognition of the work and life of the late Nobel Laureate, Professor Wangari Maathai, who dedicated her life to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development in Africa. In January 2012, the African Union (AU) adopted a decision calling for the joint celebrations of the African Environment Day and Wangari Maathai Day. The AU is leading the 2016 celebrations in Ethiopia.

We will be marking this day by planting trees at Lavington Mixed Secondary School, Nairobi, from 9.30 -11.30 a.m and hope that you can join us.

The 2016 celebrations will be commemorated with the provisional theme:Strengthening Women's Rights over Natural Resources. This theme is taken in view of the theme for the January 2016 AU Summit which is:African Year of Human Rights with Particular Focus on Women's Rights.

We look forward to your participation in the event.

Yours Sincerely,
Aisha Karanja
