About Wangari Maathai Day

The African Union in 2012 agreed to devote the 3rd of March of every year to the celebration of the work and vision of the late Professor Wangari Maathai. In Nairobi, Wangari Maathai Day was commemorated alongside Africa Environment Day at UNEP's headquarters in collaboration with UNEP Environmental Education Branch. The theme for this year's celebration, Youth - Healing the Earth: Education. Environment. Empowerment, emphasized the important role of sensitization in mobilizing the younger generation for positive action on the environment. It is a forward-thinking theme that captured the promise of Professor Maathai's vision of preserving the environment for today and generations unborn. The Day sought to promote Environmental Education and Community empowerment amongst the Youth and Higher Education Institutions by re-affirming the importance of all levels of education and training towards sustainable development in Kenya and the continent of Africa.
