Wangari Maathai Institute to be involved in a new Initiative launched by Hillary Clinton

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday 31stJanuary 2013 launched four new Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) initiatives valued at up to 86.5 Million, at the US Department of State (See Full text).

One of those initiatives is called wPower. wPower looks at the cross-cutting challenges of climate change, access to clean energy, technology, and economic opportunity for women. The partners in this initiative are MacArthur Foundation, USAID, CARE International, Solar Sister, SSP, the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, and the Wangari Maathai Institute.

The initiative will provide training for more than 7,000 women entrepreneurs, helping them to sell new technologies, like clean cookstoves and solar lanterns in India, Nigeria, and throughout East Africa.

Wanjira Mathai, daughter of Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai and board member of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies represented the WMI at the launch of this Initiative and delivered some remarks (See full text). 

Other personalities that attended this meeting include the Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s issues Melanne Verveer and the Special Representative for Global Partnerships Kris Balderston.
