The African Union in 2012 agreed to devote the 3rd of March of every year to the celebration of the work and vision of the late Professor Wangari Maathai. In Nairobi, Wangari Maathai Day was commemorated alongside Africa Environment Day at UNEP's headquarters in collaboration with UNEP Environmental Education Branch.
3rd March 2014 - The Green Belt Movement, (GBM) celebrated Wangari Maathai Day, African Environment Day and World Wildlife Day with Nobel Women's Initiative, and Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, CAVS joined UNEP for a day filled with youth dialogues for inspiration and ideas to act at the UNEP headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi.
