Wangari has expressed her concern about the unfolding events in Kenya. Like many Kenyans she is deeply saddened by the violence and the threat this poses to Kenya’s peace and prosperity.
Wangari calls for leaders throughout Kenya to exercise restraint and urge their followers to avoid violence and seek a peaceful resolution to the crisis within the framework of the constitution and the rule of law.
Like many other leaders she recognizes that resolution depends on President Kibaki and Raila Odinga stepping forward to demonstrate leadership for the sake of the country. Wangari has joined with others in urging the two leaders to reach out and begin a dialogue to seek agreement and compromise to defuse the situation. She said, “The President must step forward and talk to the people and reach out to Raila and the opposition.”
Once peace and order are restored Wangari is supporting calls for an independent, open and transparent review of the electoral reporting process. European governments and the United States have made similar calls to President Kibaki.
