We, the Nobel Peace Laureates and Laureate Organizations attending the 2006 Gwangju Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, believe that the political and physical freedom of our colleague Madame Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma must be guaranteed. We stand alongside Madame Aung San Suu Kyi who is struggling for the development of democracy in her homeland and with all those who advocate for democracy around the world. We strongly call for free and fair elections, and for the immediate and full restoration of the civil and political rights of all who have been deprived of them.—June 17, 2006, At the closing of the “2006 Gwangju Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates”
